PROTECTING OUTSIDE DOGS FROM THE ELEMENTS
Thousands of dogs live outside year-round without adequate shelter to protect them from the elements. Day after day, these innocent animals endure everything their environment throws at them - from extreme heat in the scorching summers, to bitterly cold freezing nights, and the isolation that comes with living outdoors. It is a physically and emotionally difficult life, and our mission through GimmeShelter is to improve the standard of living for these dogs.
We believe dogs deserve to be in a loving and safe home and do not condone any dog living outside, but some owners assert their legal right to keep dogs this way.
Under current Pennsylvania laws and city ordinances, owners are allowed to leave their dogs outside as long as they comply with requirements which include - but are not limited to - providing shelter that retains the dog's body heat, food, water, and other essentials. Unfortunately, even these minimal requirements are often not met - leaving dogs in dangerous, painful and inhumane conditions. Our goal is to help to enforce laws through dialogue and by providing caring and non-judgmental assistance to dog owners.
Our volunteers build respectful and ongoing relationships with pet owners so we can work together to improve their dog's quality of life and wellbeing. We provide dog houses, food, no-freeze water bowls, straw, toys, and other resources - along with ongoing support.
We have witnessed the difference this help makes to the dogs, and gives us a foundation to make even greater improvements in the community, but we cannot do this without help.
We rely on the kindness of those who believe these dogs deserve better, and our daily work is funded by donations from compassionate people. If you can help us to keep moving forward for the dogs whose lives are changed by GimmeShelter, we would be deeply grateful for your support!
